Public Paddles + Educational Canoe Trips

As a community organization, the NBBC is dedicated to providing safe and free access to the water for those that live, work and play in and around North Brooklyn. In 2015, we will be offering two types of public boating events, both totally free and easy to join:

1. Public Paddles
These are informal paddles where walk-up participants can join a trained NBBC guide for a short trip out on the water, often from our dock out towards the East River. This may be in our big canoes, regular tandem canoes or sit on top kayaks depending on the conditions that day. Public paddle days are also a great chance to see all the ins and outs of the boatyard and enjoy some food and drink on a summer afternoon. All paddles launch from our boatyard, unless otherwise noted. Next public paddles are:
May 16th, 12 to 4pm
June 6th, 12 to 4pm
June 27th, 12 to 4pm
July 25th, 12 to 4pm
August 29th, 12 to 4pm
September 26th, 12 to 4pm

2. Educational Canoe Trips
A series of monthly educational canoe paddles on the Newtown Creek, using our 25 foot ‘Big Canoes’ – which allow for large groups of paddlers with little experience or skill. These are free to join, but require sign up in advance on our website. There will be two departures each day, with about 20 seats available on each.

The total trip lasts about two hours on land and on the creek, beginning with a tour of the ED Shed with aquariums and exhibits of the local ecology and including brief stops during the paddles for short education talks, birdwatching, and possible visits to the Newtown Creek Alliance’s Living Dock.

More info and sign up by clicking on the times below:

3rd Annual Halloween Paddle

Let our dark and silent (ACA certified) guides take you on a tour of the hauntingly beautiful post-industrial waters of the Dutch Kills. In this forgotten waterscape you’ll visit the denizens of a megacity’s dwindling frontier and look on in horror and rapture as they practice their strange crafts at the boundary between nature and industry.

All are welcome (including children) to witness the horrors of the deep – you won’t find anything this Halloween that’s more superfun(d) than this! Each canoe ride ticket includes a drink ticket to be used after your ride. You’ll need it. For those too fearful to ply the waters we’ll have a party on land with a bonfire, drinks, fried troll skin treats, and food.

The party is free to attend and requires no RSVP, but haunted canoe ride tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets sell out fast, so grab yours here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/north-brooklyn-boat-club-presents-haunted-canoe-tours-tickets-19137148727

Movie Night with Steve Zissou – A Free Event

Free movie night Friday, November 6 at 8pm because outdoor films don’t stop with the Equinox. BYOB! There will be a fire and popcorn! Bring your friends and bring your dog!

Renowned oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) has sworn vengeance upon the rare shark that devoured a member of his crew. In addition to his regular team, he is joined on his boat by Ned (Owen Wilson), a man who believes Zissou to be his father, and Jane (Cate Blanchett), a journalist pregnant by a married man. They travel the sea, all too often running into pirates and, perhaps more traumatically, various figures from Zissou’s past, including his estranged wife, Eleanor (Anjelica Huston). RSVP here.
