Frequently asked questions.
I saw some of your boats out on the water, how do I join a trip?
North Brooklyn Community Boathouse is a volunteer-run, nonprofit organization. If you want to paddle with us, you’ll need to pay the annual membership fee of $50 and become a member . Then, you can join the trips posted on our calendar.
Or, you can come to one of our free community paddling events.
Can I rent a boat?
No, we do not rent boats to the public. For to safety and insurance reasons, all paddling trips are led by a certified trip leader and participants must sign up through our calendar.
I have my own kayak, can I store my boat at NBCB?
At this time, we do not have the space to offer private boat storage. This privilege is only granted to our certified trip leaders. Check back in with us in Spring 2026, we will be moving into a new space and may have the capacity to rent space for private boat storage.
I’m interested in volunteering? How do I get involved?
There are many ways to volunteer. We are always looking for volunteers for our public paddle events. If you’re interested in helping out, you can go to our calendar to sign up. We have a list of volunteer opportunities here. If something interests you, email contact@nbcboathouse.org.
If you want to volunteer on the water, we suggest you go out on a few trips, and get familiar with how we run our paddles. Then, you can speak with a trip leader about becoming a deckhand, trip assistant, or trip leader.
I’d like to plan a private canoe or kayak trip with just my friends. Would it be possible to get a quote?
We take private groups out in kayaks or canoes. Our trips are led by an experienced ACA certified trip leader, supported by an assistant(s). Email contact@nbcboathouse.org for a quote.
When will your new boathouse open?
We hope to start moving in and setting up our new boathouse at 51 Ash Street in mid-summer 2025! However, construction on the seawall and docks won't start until the fall of 2025. We hope to be fully operational at the new location by Spring 2026.
NBCB is currently offering our trip-leader led paddling trips and Public Paddles from two temporary locations: Canoe trips are launching from Manhattan Avenue Park (next to 1205 Manhattan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222). Kayak trips are across the creek at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center (57-28 2nd St, Long Island City, NY 11101).
