Long Winter’s Night at the Boatyard

While the days are short and the water is cold, the boat club is not hibernating! For qualified kayak and canoe paddlers there are trips exploring the frozen reaches of the East River and Newtown Creek. A recent expedition involving our new trailer to Jamaica Bay got postponed because of high winds but more adventures are in the works. In the meantime, there is nautical knitting, a book club, chess, paddle carving and boat restoration! There’s a double-barreled wood-burning stove in the boatshed! Bring an armful of broken furniture and join us!

The Colors of Decay at Pugsley Creek

On the approach to Pugsley Creek in the Bronx lies a ghostship of vibrant red decay. Looking at it from the side it resembles a fish skeleton with head attached, but most beautiful of all are the colors these nautical ghosts painted their carcass in, when in the long and lonely nights no one was looking.

The internet is as barren of information about this rusty beauty as the guts of her hull itself. Who is she? Where did she come from? Who was her crew? What brought her to her perilous end? Members and curious browsers, help us solve the mysteries of this maiden! We are looking for any information or leads to write this story in depth. Please email Roman at rtetelbaum@gmail.com.

The New Explorers

Kris Timken will present her book, The New Explorers at the North Brooklyn Boat Club on Sunday, April 3, 12:30 to 2:30pm.

The New Explorers examines encounters with the American landscape by twelve contemporary female artist-adventurers.  Kris traveled across the country to talk with these women about their projects as part of her own quest to understand how artists make meaning in landscape. One of the artists is Marie Lorenz whose Tide and Current Taxi (http://www.tideandcurrenttaxi.org/) is not only a legendary artwork in/about our waterways but, with Marie at the oars, will also ferry the author to the boatyard!

There will be a discussion, book signing and the typical high-end victuals you’ve come to expect from the boatyard hard by the Pulaski Bridge. You can RSVP here.

The New Explorers discuss Landscape, Exploration and Art

Author Kris Timken presented her book, The New Explorers to a rapt and capacity crowd at the Broadway Stages Boatyard on Sunday. Renowned art writer Lucy R. Lippard and legendary artist (and paddler!) Marie Lorenz joined in the discussion of how women might approach, perceive and express the act and idea of exploration and the art inspired by it in a way that is still fairly new territory in a landscape historically dominated by male discourse and perspective. 30+mph winds prevented Kris and Lucy from rowing in with Marie in her Tide Taxi but there was a lot of talk among those attending about expeditions as soon as the waters warm up. Kris very generously donated the proceeds from sales of her book to NBBC.
