
NBCB operates through the efforts of committees and working groups.
Committees & Working Groups:

The canoe committee convenes at the start of each season to outline goals, review safety protocols, and set objectives for canoe programming and public paddling events.
Members are responsible for a range of tasks, including leading and assisting with canoe trips, maintaining boats and equipment, and organizing the storage container.
The committee provides training aimed at developing more skilled canoeists, fostering increased engagement within the paddling community, and creating a defined pathway for our paddlers to progress into trip assistants and ultimately become trip leaders.

The kayak committee is made up of various crews that support boathouse operations and ensure kayak programming runs smoothly.
Members are responsible for a variety of tasks, such as repairing, cleaning, and maintaining boats, equipment, and the boathouse at Queens Landing.

This group includes NBCB kayak trip leaders and official paddlers. They plan the upcoming season which includes kayak programming, training, events, and public paddles.
The trip leaders’ working group discusses and votes on kayaking guidelines, procedures, and safety protocols.

Focuses on advancing the organization's financial goals, researching new revenue streams, fundraising, membership structure, and cost analysis.

The Events Working Group organizes activities aimed at fundraising for the organization, fostering community connections, and having fun! The objective is to host several events throughout the year, establishing NBCB as a vibrant community hub.

This working group offers ongoing environmental education programs for both members and the community. The classes encompass a range of topics, including science and art, as well as the exploration of organisms found in Newtown Creek. The primary aim is to educate residents on the history, ecology, and sustainability of the waterways in Newtown Creek and the East River.

This is a newly formed working group seeking volunteers to assist in planning and implementing nautical crafts at NBCB. These crafts draw inspiration from the sea, boats, and maritime life.

The Cabin Committee oversees the cabin at Lake Sebago in Harriman State Park and assists in organizing training sessions and events throughout the season. Their aim is to ensure the Sebago cabin remains a hub for the NBCB community and paddling activities. Read more about our cabin here.

The Communications Committee oversees branding and messaging at NBCB. It is responsible for managing the organization’s website, social media platforms, and newsletter, while ensuring important information is communicated to members.

Committee members are trip leaders who have been appointed by the board. They oversee the safety of paddlers on the water by implementing incident reports, updating safety protocols, and act as a neutral body for members, trip assistants, and trip leaders to ask questions about on-water safety.
