Boathouse Update

NBCB Board Member, Rob Buchanan, leads our fearless Boathouse Design Team. The little committee affectionately known as the NBCBBDWG, met Wednesday April 3, 2024 for an update on boathouse construction, and a discussion of ongoing design questions and challenges. Rob shared the highlights below:

Please note that construction timelines are never concrete. Issues often arise that push dates further back. So completion dates listed below are tentative.

Tony Argento, our landlord and partner, says the building exterior may be completed and 'closed up' as early as mid-summer. That could mean being able to move some boats into the storage bays and perhaps using the upstairs shop space to make boat racks, workbenches and other furnishings for NBCB’s portion of the building. Meanwhile our waterfront designers are saying that construction on the new bulkhead, the gangways, and docks could start around the same time.

Topics discussed included the proposed design for roll-up doors in the storage bays and atrium space, a possible city requirement to store portable flood barriers on site, 'dry' sprinkler systems, and the placement of bathrooms (at least one ADA-compliant bathroom per floor) and sinks. Members shared ideas including a scaled-up atrium doorway facing the creek, the use of salvaged wood for wall and floor treatments, nautical-feeling exterior lighting, and rooftop signage.

One thorny question that remains unresolved: how public can/should our apron or 'back deck'--the 40 feet of space between the boathouse and the creek--be?

If you'd like to be added to the NBCBBDWG mailing list, email committee chair Rob Buchanan. They will meet again in a couple of months.
