NBBC Dolphin Sighting
MyFoxNY: Boat club members get close to dolphins
“A second dolphin was spotted over the weekend in the East River bringing the total to two mammals in unfamiliar territory.
Members of the North Brooklyn Boat Club spotted both dolphins. Willis Elkins and Fung Lim shot video of one of the dolphins just off 23rd Street in Manhattan.
“It was very close to our shores. It seemed pretty healthy. We kept an eye on it for 1.5 hours,” said Elkins.
Video of the dolphin shows it making its way past the canoe the pair was riding in.
It was a rare opportunity for the club members more accustomed to other finds.
“We document stuff from the mussels to the beards so seeing a dolphin would be a peak,” said Elkins.”

East River Dolphin Sighting
On Saturday, March 16th, a few members of the North Brooklyn Boat Club paddled out on a snowy and foggy afternoon to look for the dolphin recently sighted in the East River. They didn’t have to paddle far, as the mammal was just off our North Brooklyn shores. The boat club has seen some amazing wildlife on birdwatching trips and with the filter feeder working group in partnership with Newtown Creek Alliance, but this is an exciting first. The photos and footage here was captured from a canoe near the shores of Greenpoint.
As the harbor becomes cleaner and marine mammal sightings become more prevalent, it is even more important to abide by NOAA’s viewing guidelines for marine mammals. These guidelines are in place to protect these species and to help boaters avoid accidentally violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act & Endangered Species Act, which is punishable by fines of up to $50,000. In general, you should never attempt to feed marine mammals and remain a respectful distance (50 yards is the minimum recommended distance for dolphins, porpoises, seals and sea turtles).

City Atlas: East River dolphin, met by canoe
While the St. Patrick’s Day parade rolled up Fifth Avenue on Saturday, a scene unfolded in the East River that might have been more common in the eighteenth century; canoeists met a dolphin in a gentle snowfall. T Willis Elkins shot the footage on Saturday: “I paddled out with fellow members of the North Brooklyn Boat Club in snowy and foggy conditions to try and find the recently sighted dolphin in the East River. And we did!”

Gothamist: There Are Two Dolphins In The East River
“On Wednesday, a dolphin was spotted swimming around in the East River near 96th Street. Then on Friday, a dolphin was spotted on the other side of the East River near Astoria. Officials from the Riverhead Foundation weren’t sure whether it was the same dolphin or a second one, but members of the North Brooklyn Boat Club took to the water yesterday and confirmed there are TWO dolphins currently hanging out in the East River. And like a lot of Manhattan residents, the bottlenosed dolphin from the Upper East Side has moved to Greenpoint.
“We paddled out today and saw the dolphin further south—near Greenpoint,” North Brooklyn Boat Club member Willis Elkins told us. Despite the snowy conditions, they spotted the second dolphin uptown: “Kayakers from our club also spotted a second, and smaller, dolphin north from where we were in the canoe—near the Queensboro bridge on the west channel,” he said.”
