Hard Hat Tour of NBCB’s Future Home

View from Ash Street

Back in November 2022, NBCB officially announced the construction of a new boathouse at 51 Ash Street, along the Newtown Creek in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

The new boathouse is funded through a grant from the Newtown Creek Environmental Benefit Fund (NCEBF), and managed by the City Parks Foundation. Broadway Stages, on whose land the building is being constructed, is overseeing construction and has made significant financial contributions to the project. For the first time – and unique amongst boathouses in NYC – NBCB will own their facility and secure their access to the waterway in perpetuity.

The new boathouse will be close to 8000 sq ft and provide ample space for boat and equipment storage, training and workshops, an environmental education center, nautical crafts/boatbuilding workshop, offices, bathrooms, changing rooms, lockers, a kitchenette and more.

On Wednesday May 31st, NBCB board members; Willis Elkins, Nick Legowski, Rob Buchanan, Mario Longobardi, Julie D’Aprile and co-president Patterson Beckwith, were given a hard-hat tour by founding member Dewey Thompson and Tony Argento, founder, and owner of Broadways Stages. Check out the photos below. Interior layout plans are still in the design phase.  If you’re interested, please contact us to join our Design Group.

The first floor is 9 ft high by 18 ft wide. There are 3 bays for boat storage and 1 bay for storing equipment (PFDs, paddles, etc). NBCB members and guests will enter through McGuinness Boulevard Extension (currently the DOT site).

The back of the first floor will be open and include a ramp with access to the creek. Boats and big canoes will be suspended from above for storage. An ideal outdoor space for parties and get-togethers.

The second floor will have a kitchenette, change room with lockers, bathroom, an environmental education space, and boat building. This is somewhat of a flexible space that can be used for various NBCB classes and meetings.

The third floor has double-height ceilings, a mezzanine and large outdoor deck. This floor will be used for nautical crafts and office space. Broadway Stages will occupy floors 4 to 6.

Completion of the project will take approximately 18 months. Construction on the bulkhead is expected to start in the spring of 2024.
