City of Water Day 2024

Now in its 17th year, City of Water Day is organized by Waterfront Alliance and New York–New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP), to champion a climate-resilient New York and New Jersey harbor. It’s a day of free, family-friendly events on or near the water across all five boroughs, Westchester and Rockland counties, and New Jersey.

Taking place this year on Saturday, July 13, NBCB is celebrating the day with Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) and Hunters Point Park Conservancy (HPPC) for a super-size, special edition Public Paddle. From 12-4pm, we'll be offering free kayaking at Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center in Long Island City, Queens, AND free canoe trips at MASE Park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

During our Queens Landing paddle, NCA will be providing hands-on environmental education programming to engage visitors with topics of marine ecology, water quality, superfund contamination, and resilience needs in the wake of sea level rise and storm surges. Programming is for all ages and will be run from 12-4pm.

At 5pm, HPPC will be hosting a History and Resiliency tour of Hunter's Point South Park. The event starts at Queens Landing Boathouse and will cover the history of LIC’s wetlands and waterfront, the role of the waterways in moving goods during industrialization, and the challenges of building a residential community in a previously highly-industrialized neighborhood.

The group will then move to the adjacent park for a walk that will focus on the park’s resilient features, offering an overview of the benefits of green infrastructure when building resilient communities.

There’s a lot going on and we need your help. Register to volunteer!
